Fishing on the River Rother

CatcliffeWho would have thought that the once most polluted river in the country a few years ago would have turned out to be a vastly improving fishery—well that’s the Rother in Catcliffe.

I was born a few hundred yards from the Rother, some 60 years ago, and up to a few years ago, the people of Catcliffe and myself had to put up with the awful stench that came from the river on a daily basis. The smell of napther, gas and other obnoxious chemicals that wafted over our village every day from the coming plant was hardly bearable, but we were born to it. We didn’t know any better in those days, but along with the pits and the steel works, it provided a living for local people. Now that all those places have been closed down, the air around Catcliffe is once again clean and so is the river.

Catcliffe, Brinsworth and Treeton Anglers Alliance have control of a mile of river at Catcliffe, and believe me it produces some very good fish—big perch—the best up to now being a 4 pounder taken by Mick Kitchin in a match when he had eight perch for 21½ lbs, there are also some very good chub—up to 7½ pounds, with a few 2lb roach; some very good barble, up to 12lb taken by Brian Slack, carp, up to 20lbs taken by Dave Tomlinson and pike, gudgeon, also trout up to 4½ pounds. With bags of small roach, dace and chublet.

There are 50 platforms, 23 of these are 4 foot wide and 5 foot long. They are made from recycled plastic and have a ten year guarantee which cost £5,000 awarded from the Catcliffe and Brinsworth Partnership Community Chest for which we are very thankful.

If you're interested in fishing . . .

River Rother—access to the river is very easy by car or by bus as it lies on the main bus routes from Rotherham or Sheffield. It is easy to find by car just off the M1 motorway, junction 33, via the Sheffield parkway to the village of Catcliffe. The river, running alongside Orgreave Road, with free parking at both ends of our fishery.

No outside matches are allowed on the last Sunday of each month, as this is when we hold our own members’ matches. The fee for the members’ match is £5, all in. This is all paid back to members in cash at the end of each match, i.e. first, second and third. For the Sunday match we meet at 8.00 am and fish from 9.00 am until 3.00 pm. We also hold a late match on the second Wednesday of each month meeting at 1.00 pm and fishing from 2.00 pm until 8.00 pm in the summer.

There are good paths to walk on and platforms at each numbered peg. Dogs are allowed, but only if you are a member of the club or you have a day ticket. At the time of printing prices are £10 per season for adults, half price for OAPs and children under 16. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Children under 12 may fish free, but only with an adult alongside them who is also fishing. If only the child is fishing then he or she must purchase a ticket.

The fishery offers many good aspects of fishing; its diversity offers good sport to the many different types of fishing, with some very deep slow glides to faster shallow swims, making it ideal for float or ledger fishing.
