Catcliffe in 1879

Catcliffe is a small township and village in Rotherham Parish Union, county court district and petty sessional division, Handsworth polling district of South West Yorkshire, York Diocese and Archdeaconary and Rotherham Rural Deanery.

The township had 326 inhabitants in 1871 living on 704 acres of land.

Here is a Glassworks established about a hundred years ago by Mr. John May.

The extension of Colliery operations has led to an increase in population.

The Wesleyans have a chapel in the village, built in 1859 at a cost of £450.

A School Board was formed on 18th August, 1875 and consists of J. Blunn, Esq., Chairman, James Guest, Esq., Vice Chairman, and Messrs. J.J. Brightmore, Thomas Brightmore, and J. Platts. Mr. W. H. Platts is clerk. The board built the school in 1876 for eighty children, at a cost of £2500.
