Extract from White's History & Directory of Rotherham, 1833
These extracts cover the Date Band 1750-1850.Treeton
Treeton is a retired village pleasantly seated on an eminence above the Rother. The parish which contains 680 inhabitants is divided into three townships and manors of Treeton, Brampton and Ulley. The Duke of Norfolk is Lord and owner of Treeton, except a detached portion, 400A, of that township, which is intermixed with the village and parish of Wales, and belongs to the Duke of Leeds. It is considered as part of Hallamshire, having passed with Sheffield to the Lovetots and Furnivals, of whom it was held by Robert de Pierrepont, who, in the 8th of Richard II, obtained a charter of freewarren in all his demesne lands here and at Anston. The church dedicated to St. Helen, is an ancient rectory, and has an effigy of a knight in armour, commonly called Earl Gilbert, and many sepulchral memorials. The Duke of Norfolk is the patron, and the Rev. Geo. Chandler, M.A., the incumbent.
