John Norton

John Norton
I did not know John Norton. He was my great grandfather. Born on the 7th July, 1855. in Broxholme , a small village and parish, 6 miles north-west of Lincoln and 2 miles north-east of Saxilby.

There was a railway station here.

At this time, Broxholme had a population of 126 inhabitants and there was 1298 acres of land.

rebecca Norton

He was the eldest son of John and Rebecca Norton. John, senior, was a Farm estate worker. Rebecca had 12 children, including twin boys. She never moved more than 4 miles from where she lived!

It was tradition in the family to name the first son ‘John’.

Betsy
My great grandfather married Betsey Jepson, (daughter of Samuel and Martha Jepson of Ingham. See below ) on the 23rd December, 1875 at Grimethorpe Church , Yorkshire.

They had 6 children, only 3 survived.

At one stage, They lived at 31 New Hollingwood, Staveley . Martha Louisa was born at New Hollingwood on 5th December, 1876 and died aged four years. She was interred at Staveley Cemetery on New Years day of 1881. George was born at New Hollingwood on 15th December, 1878 and died on 23rd December , only 9 days old. He was interred at Staveley Cemetery. Beatrice Mary was born at Staveley on 17th December, 1879.

Perhaps he worked at Hollingwood pit

It is not noted when the family moved to Treeton but we presume he went there for work.

On 1st November, 1882 John William was born at Catcliffe, Rotherham. On 27th March, 1885 Florence Rebecca was born at Treeton, she lived 9 months and was interred at Treeton in May 1885.

At the time of the 1891 census, he was living at 223 Main or Sheffield Rd, Aughton, Sheffield. This document states he was an Under Manager of a Coal Mine. and confirms that his wife,Betsey Norton, was from Ingham Lincolnshire.
Beatrice Mary Norton, then aged 10 was born in,Staveley Derbyshire,
John Wm Norton, then aged 8 was born in Catcliffe Yorkshire,
There was a Florance Berresford - a servant aged 15, living with them who was born in Holmes East Riding Yorkshire,
Betsy Jepson Norton, then aged 11 months was born in Treeton, Yorkshire.

In 1896, He was Colliery underground manager at Treeton pit.

In November, 1896 his first wife Betsy died and was interred at Treeton.

It is noted he served on Treeton Parish Council in 1897.

There was an accident at Treeton pit around 1897 and John was the first down the pit, with the canary; in recognition of his bravery, he was presented with a clock

In 1901 he was living in Brierley, Yorkshire. It is noted that in 1895, Grimethorpe Colliery was opened, maybe he moved here for better prospects.

Christmas, 1924,John and Clara Norton

He married Clara Cunnington at Barnsley in 1909

I found details here about Clara - single, age 25, born Spalding, schoolmistress in Thimbleby in 1891

In 1908 he was under manager of Silkstone Fall at Dodworth according to this list of mines.

Withington

I can only presume that they were living in Manchester, in and around 1918, because his daughter Betsy was married in Manchester. I believe they had a shop at Withington. I have a postcard dated 1915 the address 97 Pearson Street, Queens Road, Miles Platting. It is noted that members of the Cunnington family lived in Manchester, maybe that was the reason John and Clara moved to Manchester.

Upton Cottage Abergele John and Clara retired to Abergele around 1921 where they lived at Upton Cottage, Groes Lwyd, Abergele , until their deaths on 20/02/1941 and 8/02/1941.

When he lived in Abergele, he still ordered coal from Treeton pit and the Milkman used to deliver it to Abergele!

Upton Cottage Abergele        Miss Garbutt, John, Clara Norton

Upton Cottage was named after Upton Pit at Hemsworth.

I have his family bible and this is where I have taken the main information from.

His estate was valued at £1138 10 s 10d , after expenses and debts paid including:
