The Mercer family were in Whiston from the mid 1600s. Widow Mercer is listed in the Hearth Tax of 1672

James Mercer b1822, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Mercer, Stone Quarry mason , married Sarah Walker (1824-1865). Children:

Benjamin Mercer and Charlotte had 4 children:

Benjamin died on 15th November 1888 at 24 Furnival Lane, Sheffield. His occupation was a Drayman. After Benjamin's death, Charlotte Mercer re-married to William Smith on 1st March 1891. She died on 16th April 1902 in a Sheffield workhouse aged 45.

Emily and James had 2 sons, they were Willie (born about 1883) and Harry (born about 1890). Harry Ainsworth, died 17th May 1959 aged 68 at 26 Newton Street, Rotherham. Emily Ainsworth re-married in about 1899 to Philip Michael as her husband James Ainsworth died in 1892.
