Harold Clegg

Harold Clegg was the youngest son of William and Catherine nee Pigeon of 62 High Street, Dodworth. He was born on the 8th July, 1889 at Dodworth, Barnsley.

While at Dodworth, he was a member of the Band of Hope Union and in 1900, when he was 11, he received a Certificate of Merit for excellence in Reporting a Lecture on Alcohol and The Human Body

During the war he was a Field Engineer with The Royal Engineers (Unit 529th Field)

Form Of Will
This photograph shows a Form of Will to be used by a soldier. This is dated 1st November, 1916 - he was not yet married and it is noted that Betsy Norton, lived at 97 Pearson Street, Queens Road, Manchester

He married Betsy Jepson Norton on the 25th October, 1917. She was the daughter of John Norton and Betsy Jepson.

Have not determined when he moved from High Street, maybe when he left the Royal Engineers.

Thornley Avenue was home until around 1931 when the family moved to Treeton .

This photograph shows the gardens and fields to the rear of Thornley Avenue.

Harold and Betsy had 2 children. Norman , born on 23rd June, 1921 and Harold Edward, born on 26th October, 1923.

While at Treeton, they lived at Arundel Avenue, then at Well Lane.

He was a Carpenter by trade and was employed at the Treeton Cottage Stores.

He was a member of Treeton Methodist Chapel where he was Choirmaster until 1952. In 1959, he did some Restoration work at the Methodist Chapel.

After a very short illness, he died at Moorgate General Hospital on 27th February, 1976
