Clegg of Dodworth

Thomas CLEGG Yeoman - died on or about April 1814 at Alverley, WestgateCommon,WAKEFIELD - (letter of probate)

He had a brother John.

John had a son Thomas who died Feb 1844 (named in Will of Thomas yeoman).

Thomas had at least 2 sons: unknown and William Clegg, Tax Collector who married 04 OCT 1824 at Silkstone to Mary Irving b.1800, Brampton,Yorks. William died 26.2.1877. In 1881 Mary was living at 38 Dodworth Rd, Barnsley with son James and wife Maria (Senior)

It is thought that Edward Clegg may have been the 1st son of Thomas.(above). Edward Clegg b.1810/1811 Dodworth. In 1851 a Cotton Weaver living at Catch Inn Lane, Barton-Upon-Irwell, Lancashire with wife Anne age 36 and a relative, John Clegg, a widower age 21? also a Cotton Weaver. In 1881 Edward is back in Dodworth living at 13 Jacksons Square. He is a widower aged 71, Hand Loom Linen Weaver. In his Will dated 1887, Edward claims to be the next of kin or a Charles Barber, merchant of Calcutta, who died in 1799 in London. This has yet to be investigated. Refer to Barber family

• It is thought Benjamin CLEGG was their son.

In 1881 James, a grocer, and Maria were living at 38 Dodworth Rd, Barnsley with:

• Jonathan CLEGG Son age 11 Dodworth
• Herbert CLEGG Son age 8 Dodworth
• Mary CLEGG, born 1800 Brampton, Mother Widow age 81

James Clegg bought 2 properties at Goldthorpe Lane Ends in March,1896. He died 2 May 1896. Source:Legal docs and Will.

Maria Senior, daughter of John, a Weaver, and Sarah Senior of Dodworth was baptised Aug 26 1838 at Silkstone. Witnesses at her marriage: George Totty, Ann Senior.. Maria died at 7 High Street, Dodworth, 21st July 1918 aged 80, of Influenza.

JOHN RIDING born 1858, son of Thomas Riding b.1813 Wigan Linen Hand Loom Weaver. In 1881 Thomas and John, a miner resided at 5 Tan Yard Dodworth. John Riding met MARY CLEGG 1883 in Barnsley. Children of JOHN RIDING and MARY CLEGG are:
