CORONATION FESTIVITIES
Although the Coronation events in our village are now complete, we will talk and reminisce about this occasion for many a year, these fragments of memories, will, Ihope, set your mind remembering not only now, but perhaps years ahead, should you pick up this number. the predominent memory is of rain which "cold watered" many organised events, especially the fancy dress parade and coronation day itself. the colourful and well written programme will long be treasured by villagers and outsiders who lived here in their youth.
On Thursday May 28th a travelling show toured the village on a dray loaned by Mr. Alton. the evening was perfect for this new idea and during the tour many were entertained at 10 or more stops. The show finished at 10.30 p.m. with lighting being provided by Mr. Thompson's car. The following evening a Coronation dance was well attended - this fortunately being out of the weather's control. the usual annual Saturday sports day took the appropriate form of Coronation sports when prizes were presented for children as well as adult events. The coronation queen, Betty Rollinson, along with the queens of various organisations in the village, met in the village centre before proceeding to the cricket field. The Methodist church was almost packed on the Sunday night to listen to a choral concert of elizabethan music given by an amalgamated choir conducted by Mr. Dumville. Monday evening's programme should have been a fancy dress procession through the streets, but on Wood Lane it was like a fancy dress dash, due to rain. however, the organisers and competent judges carried out the programme in the Methodist schoolroom where the prizes were presented.
TUESDAY - JUNE 2ND - CORONATION DAY
‘The sun will shine down un old london town....’
‘and a beautiful picture you’ll see.....’
These words from one of the, popular coronation songs sung by the Travelling show – I’ll not say made famous - shows how song writers, as well as weather forcasters, make mistakes.
a service in the Parish church commenced at 9.0 a.m., being conducted by the three ministers, whilst in the afternoon teas were provided for old folks and children. As we club members were none of these, we had a Coronation tea in our schoolroom, thanks to Pat Thompson and her merry band - the stronger sex having to wash up all Pat’s crockery. Aah well - it was a smashing tea - ‘nuff said.
The torchlight procession etc. were cancelled and a social was organised in the Church schoolroom.
Friday night, concluded the celebrations when the postponed events of Tuesday evening were carried out. At 9.30 p.m. a torchlight procession set off to tour the village. In it were a team of climbers recently returned from the Orgreave tip expedition with mud still on their boots. This expedition was spurred on by the Tuesday morning announcement that Hillary of New Zealand and Tiger Tensing of Nepal had reached the summit of Mount Everest.
The parade, as indeed were all the others, was headed by the Treeton boy scout’s band, and the tour gave us a wonderful sight in the buntings and fairy lights which beautified our village. the Church was flood lit and had coloured bulbs hanging in the trees and along Front Street and towards the porch. the Baptist church was also lit with coloured bulbs, and our own chapel had the initials “E.R.” lit up in red, white and blue. the evening concluded with fireworks and a bonfire on the recreation ground. indeed a week to remember.

TREETON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
The first annual show of the above society took place on Saturday, 22nd August, in the old sports field, Wood Lane. We congratulate the society for, organising a show of this nature in Treeton, and the exhibitors for producing and making so many colourful exhibits. Prize winners closely connected with the "Pennuth" were Dave Harper, Joyce Parrott and Roy Cox.
The West Riding Police Road Safety Exhibition became very popular because photographs depicting non-observance of the highway code were “shot" in Treeton.
The cookery demonstratlon given by the Electricity and Gas boards were also well attended: the television show brought wishes of there being a Test Match on or it being Cup Final day. I, personally, kept as far away as possible from the Army Recruiting tent so no report can be given of them. On the small stage at the bottom of the field, near to the pit, a display of physical culture was given by the Rex Gray school. The children were catered for by swings and roundabouts. We earnestly hope that the show is to be given next year, in which case we should like to see a field full of attractions and enough spectators to support them.
