The Hall family of Catcliffe and Treeton
My great grandfather James Henry Hall was born in 1864 at Catcliffe. He was registered by his mother Mary Elizabeth Hall but there was no father mentioned on the birth cert. Residence of mother given as Treeton. James Henry was baptized at St. Helens Church, Treeton on 21/1/1866. The vicar at that time, I think, was Bernard Edward Watkins.
On the 1871 census Mary Elizabeth and her son James Henry Hall are living with William Beech at 'Cottage' Catcliffe. William Beech is down as a Blacksmith and unmarried, Mary Elizabeth Hall as Housekeeper and unmarried but there are children Fanny Beech, Florence Beech, relationship to head of household, William Beech, as daughters. Not only that but James Henry Hall is down as Williams son ( although I know he is not his biological son). During my research into this I was sent a letter by a member of the Beech family and they confirmed that they all thought William and Mary Elizabeth were common-law husband and wife and, apart from James Henry, that the daughters were William and Mary's!! They also probably had a son called Alfred Beech who was buried in 1869 at Rotherham Cemetery aged 3 weeks.
There is also a link with the Liversidge families of Treeton. James Henry Hall's aunty Annie Hall (sister of Mary Elizabeth, I believe) married Alfred Liversidge. On 1881 census James Henry Hall now aged 18, a coal miner, is with his grandfather John Hall born 1811 Grimesthorpe aged 70, they are living with Alfred Liversidge and Annie Liversidge nee Hall and their family at 29 Buckcroft, Handsworth.
