MANY ATTRACTIONS AT SUCCESSFUL EVENT
The first annual sports day organised by the sports sub-committee in connection with the Treeton Community Centre, Playing Fields and Memorial Scheme, was held in the Treeton Cricket Field last Saturday. Over 1,000 paid for admission to the ground, and the effort was so successful that it is to continue as an annual event for the scheme. The success was largely due to the energetic efforts of a hard working sports sub-committee.The proceedings commenced with a fancy dress pageant which met in the village centre and paraded to the cricket field, headed by the Sports Queen and her attendants and the Treeton Boy Scouts' Band.
The Sports Queen, Miss Audrey Sinclair, who was elected at a dance held recently, was attended by Miss Aileen Hallatt and Miss Rhoda Taylor with Norma Sinclair and Kita Mason as train bearers and Ann Spencer as crown bearer. The crowning ceremony was performed by Mrs. E. Blueman, who received a bouquet from Ann Spencer.
The judges of fancy dress were Mr. and Mrs. Chapman, Mr. and Mrs. Worrall, the Rev. and Mrs Searle-Barnes, and Dr. and Mrs. Evans, and the prizewinners were:
- 2 to 5 ; 1 Shirley Gilbank (“No ??? Coupons”), 2 Christine Drinkhall (“Little Bo Peep”), 3 Mercia Ward (“Reckitts Blue”), 4 David Britland (“John Bull”)
- 6 to 10: 1 Barry Wastney (“Bread the staff of Life"), 2 Sybil Hag?? And Jean Smith ("Before you cross the road"), 3 Maureen Allsop ("Long may they reign”)
- 11 to 15: 1 Shirley Taylor (“Community Centre”), 2 Shirley Eastwood (“Cleopatra”), 3 Margaret Cartwright and Edith Payne ("Bisto Twins"), Marjorie Smith (“Eliza”)
- Novelty Class: 1 Thelma Piercey and Mary Asworth (“G.I. Bride”), 2 Joan Frost, Mary Garner and Nancy Farmer (“Sport For All”), 3 Roy Hoff (“Stop Me and Buy One”)
- Special costume prize: Mrs. Eastwood (“Carmen Miranda”)
A baby show, which attracted over 90 entries, was judged by Dr. and Mrs. Core, of Rotherham, and was held in the Treeton Colliery Staff Canteen. Prizewinners were:
- Up to 4 months; 1 John Stanley, 2 Patricia Hughes, 3 Peter Smith, consolation Keith Somerset;
- 4 to 8 months: 1 Malcolm Thompson and Edna Payne, 2 Raymond Slater, 3 Noreen Knapton, 4 Nell Bonser, consolation prize Jean Bishop;
- 8 to 12 months: 1 Barry Price, 2 Christine Leader, 3 Dilys Naylor, consolation Jeanette Coote;
- 12 to 18 months: 1 Patrick Halford, 2 Gillian Thomas, 3 Rex Brown, consolation Kevan Robinson, special mention the Windle twins;
- 18 months to 2 years 1 David Cox, 2 David Hague, 3 Carol Foster, consolation John Stringer;

In a tug-of-war four teams competed, and the Well Lane and Bole Hill team beat Station Hoad and Mill Lane in the ??? straight pulls.
Side shows and competitions included shooting, darts and rings, bowling at the wicket, coins in the bucket and guessing competitions.
Teas were provided in the Colliery canteen. Music was provided by amplifying equipment supplied by Mr. H. Smith, of Well Lane, Treeton.
There was dancing on the green in the evening, with Mr. C. Cartledge as M.C.

The chairman of the sports sub-committee was Mr. A. Tinkler, treasurer Mr. E. Mason. and secretaries Mr. G. R. Fox and Mr. W. C. Spencer. The baby show was organised by the Ladies' Committee, which also took charge of many of the side shows. Mr. and Mrs. B. Billingsley were in charge of the shooting range. The committee were indebted to the National Coal Board, through Mr. C. R. Adkin and Mr. W. Cox. for valuable help in the field arrangements and to the Treeton Cricket Club for placing the field at their disposal.
