In 1861 George Appleyard of Treeton was mentioned in archived documents as a Corn Miller. He bought a cornmill, starch house and British gum manufactory (565 sq. yds.) near the Corn and Butter Market- later converted into a brewery known as Rother Brewery Reference: 213/C/49/6. By 1870 he lived at Canklow
