Wood

George William Wood was the son of Edward Wood, born in 1844 at Bleasby, Lincolnshire. Edward married Jane Beecroft from Malton, in 1865 in Ebberston in Yorkshire. In 1881 they were living at 64 Effingham Street, Rotherham. Edward was a labourer. Children:

George married Annie Edith Reed at The Crofts in Rotherham in 1892 and moved to Treeton about 1893/4. They lived at 8 Station Road, Treeton, the Masbrough Equitable Pioneer premises, later the Rotherham Co-operative shop. He was the manager of the shop and lived there between 1893 and 1911 with his wife Annie Edith and 4 daughters May (1893), Lilian Doris (1896), Ethel Winifred (1902) and Hilda Mary (1903).

The Masbrough Equitable Pioneer Society store was built in the late 1890's so the Wood's were probably the first family to occupy the premises.

Masbrough Equitable Pioneer Stores, Treeton

The family are listed in the 1901 census:
George W Wood, age 35, Grocery manager at stores, born Ebberston, Yorkshire
Annie E Wood Wife, age 33 born Rotherham
Edith M Wood, daughter, age 7 born Rotherham
Lillian Doris Wood age 4 born Treeton.

In 1911 the family are still at Treeton and another daughter, Hilda Mary was born in 1903.

I am informed that the family moved around the time of the 1st World War to Doncaster where George was the gardener at Edenthorpe Hall, Doncaster.

George died in 1961 in Lincoln at the age of 95 at the house of his daughter Ethel.
